Puppy Manners group training classes are designed for people just like you! We have been raising the bar for the family dog for over a decade. You probably don’t really want a show dog—but a “show off” dog would be great! We offer free-play sessions in Puppaccino and Star-Barks which helps the dogs “get their beans out” and after free-play we get to work! These are great opportunities for you to put your dog in “real-world” situations while remaining in a controlled environment, allowing you to train your dog and establish the relationship and leadership you’ll need with your dog when you go out in public… Did someone mention Starbucks!?! With your well-behaved dog, you can order a latté, sit relaxed at the café table without having your dog embarrass you!

We do not accept intact (non-neutered) male dogs over the age of 9 months into group training classes without prior approval from the instructor. If your male dog is not neutered, we will be happy to work with you privately or refer you to other group training classes offered at Cascade Kennels that may accept intact males. Male dogs that mark in class may be withheld from free play. We do not accept aggressive dogs into group training classes. If your dog has aggression issues, we will be happy to work with you and your dog outside of our group training classes to get you the help you need. Please contact us prior to class with aggression issues so we won’t be forced to dismiss your dog from group class.

Calling all kids! (ages 7 to 13)

It’s a just-for-kids class that teaches you about dogs by playing games, learning tricks and having fun. Bring your dog or, if you don’t have one yet, practice with one of ours!

Some vets like to give the Bordatella vaccine to pups AFTER 16 weeks of age. If your puppy has a parasite or giardia, you may still come to class without your puppy. Alternatively you may bring your puppy and crate him during the socialized play period which is only about 10 minutes of the class time. In the latter case, your puppy would be permitted attendance after socialized play concluded.
Once your puppy has a clear fecal and the report has been submitted, he may participate in the socialized play portion of the class. This is a class designed for new puppy dog owners and their puppies that are 8 – 20 weeks. If you just brought your puppy home – or even if you do not have your puppy yet – this seminar will put you in the right Express Lane with your pup!

You will also learn how to pet your puppy in a way that will calm him. Yes, there are better ways to pet a dog! Come learn our secrets! During the seminar there will be a safe social play session. Even the way your puppy plays can tell you a lot about their personality. This is an issues-oriented class geared toward demonstrating all the benefits of crate training, potty bell training, establishing positive relationship and building a better bond with your puppy, soon to be a dog! We will also teach you good games and bad games as well as an exercise that will build an amazing trust with your puppy. We will also throw in a puppy trick or two!

The unsafe things your vet is referring to include dog parks, public parks, the beach and other “unsafe” doggie areas where we don’t have control of the dogs they meet or the environment to which they are exposed. All puppies in our classes have been vet checked and are current on their shots; it is a requirement for admission.
Puppy socialization is vital to your dog’s overall healthy attitude. There is a prime “window of opportunity” to socialize a puppy and that window is prior to 16 weeks of age. So don’t miss out! Many dogs end up in shelters due to the lack of socialization. Lack of socialization can cause many other issues such as aggression. So embrace every chance you see to socialize your pup!
Along with teaching your puppy sit, down and wait, you will learn how to handle your puppy’s interaction with children – I call it “Good Games and Bad Games.” You will be cautioned about games that children play which foster aggression. You will be encouraged to play alternative games that teach your dog good manners and build confidence. Of all the classes that are most important we think this class is it. You can’t turn back the clock and socialize a puppy. Plus it’s great fun for the whole family! It helps for families to hear the advice and coaching come from our experienced and humorous puppy coaches.

Star-Barks 101 [Beyond Puppyhood] (Family dog obedience, aka: The Teenage Years and Beyond)
There is no prerequisite for this class. All friendly and sociable dogs over the age of 4 months are welcome to enroll in Star-Barks 101; toy breeds over 5 months. (Toy breeds may take the Puppaccino class up to six months of age.) This class will help get you and your dog on the path to being a “Star-Barks Dog.”
Isn’t it the goal of all Seattle-ites to have a “Star-Barks” dog? It’s the wonderful, well-behaved dog you see once in a while lying by a café table outside Starbucks, hangin’ out with his family and not embarrassing them! You say to yourself, “I’d bring my dog if he were that good!” In this class, we will address all “family” dog issues such as jumping and mouthing along with basic commands such as sit, down, wait, stay, loose leash walking and last but not least good Café Star-Barks manners! Don’t ever think that having a “Star-Barks Dog” is setting the bar too high for you and your best buddy!
Of course all work and no play makes for a stressed pup so there will be some free play for those dogs that enjoy a good romp! The added benefits are socialization for your dog and entertainment for you and your family! It’s so fun to see our dogs have fun; we could all take a lesson from just watching dogs play!

This class includes work on responding to your first command, dealing with “problem behaviors,” proper placement on sits and downs, improving focus and attitude – plus, we coach YOU and build up YOUR skills and confidence as a handler. All Star-Barks dogs will be invited to attend a field trip to Starbucks at the conclusion of this class. Lattés are free, compliments of Invisible Fence Northwest! This field trip is in ADDITION to your regular classes. It’s free and most of all it’s fun. So plan to make this date with your Star-Barks Canine Companion and us!
If you are considering doing therapy dog work down the road this class would be of great benefit and we are happy to help you achieve that goal.

Seattle's Best Dogs (Real World Applications)
Ready to take the next step with your dog? Seattle’s Best Dogs is specifically for students who have already taken Star-Barks 101 and are looking to work on more advanced subject matter. Our instructors individually tailor each session to meet the needs and skill levels of the dogs in that class, so each session is different. Through a series of games and exercises, we’ll focus on things like leash work, distracted stays, faster responses and better recalls. Socialized playtime is held at the end of class, helping dogs to learn to work before play and how to handle frustration.
A local field trip will help us practice out in the real world, amid real-life distractions. Bring your sense of humor and a willingness to do your homework. By the end, you’re sure to find that your dog is one of “Seattle’s Best Dogs!”

Get Along LITTLE Doggies (Socialized play for little puppies at the Puppy Manners Ranch!)
Being a student at Puppy Manners does have its privileges! If you are currently attending a Puppaccino class or you are currently enrolled in a future Puppaccino class you are eligible to attend the “Get Along LITTLE Doggies” events at the Puppy Manners Ranch. We prefer that you register and reserve your play spot but it’s okay to pay as you play. Puppies must be less than 20 weeks of age to attend.
Ever hear of a “speakeasy?” That’s what this is – well sort of! A “speakeasy” is an informal event where people gather and just talk, learn, and compare the good, the bad and the ugly with other puppy parents! That’s the people part of this event. It’s nice to get to know other puppy parents.
The puppy socializing is what’s REALLY important. This is a chance for your puppy to become socialized so s/he will learn to get along with other puppies while being exposed to nice people and children. They may even have a chance to say “hi!” to our miniature horse, Mazie, or have a chance encounter with our two wonderful dog-friendly barn cats Hum and Bug! This great opportunity is for our currently enrolled students to get additional play time in a controlled environment. Trainers will be on hand to answer your questions about your puppy but, for the most part, this is all about fun for the puppies and their families.

Ever hear of a “speakeasy?” That’s what this is – well sort of! A “speakeasy” is an informal event where people gather and just talk, learn, and compare the good, the bad and the ugly with other puppy parents! That’s the people part of this event. It’s nice to get to know other puppy parents.
The puppy socializing is what’s REALLY important. This is a chance for your puppy to become socialized so s/he will learn to get along with other puppies while being exposed to nice people and children. They may even have a chance to say “hi!” to our miniature horse, Mazie, or have a chance encounter with our two wonderful dog-friendly barn cats Hum and Bug! This great opportunity is for our currently enrolled students to get additional play time in a controlled environment. Trainers will be on hand to answer your questions about your puppy but, for the most part, this is all about fun for the puppies and their families.

Seattle's Pet Therapy Express-O Seminar [Learn a latté in a single shot!]
PLEASE NOTE: The tuition for this class applies to each person. That is, one tuition, one person may attend. This is a seminar and the information is supplied to each person and for that, tuition must be paid.
This seminar is taught pet therapy evaluators. Many people have expressed a desire for a pet therapy seminar. This seminar is basically our 4 week therapy class practicum in a one-day seminar. It’s great for people that feel ready for pet therapy but may not have the time to commit to a 4 week class. Or, if you feel your dog is ready but you can use some coaching to help prepare you for the therapy test so you can become a pet therapy team. THIS is for you! Many people who are looking to get into pet therapy audit this seminar just to see what is involved. If you have a young dog and this is your goal, it’s a great educational experience and will help you prepare for the future of pet therapy. You will learn what is expected of you and your dog, what is on the test and real life problem-solving for therapy dog teams.
You are more than welcome to bring your dog to this seminar as long as s/he does not mind lying on a rug and can be a good listener. We will be practicing elements of the therapy dog test throughout the seminar. You and your dog’s skills will be evaluated and training advice will be offered to help fine tune your partnership with your dog. We will identify your weaknesses so you will know where you need to practice prior to taking your test. This test is not just about the dog, there are separate scores for you as the handler.
Those wishing to join Delta Society will be required to go through their online workbook prior to booking their test.
Testing will be scheduled a week or two after the seminar. This will give you just enough time to hit the road and get out there and practice your skills with your dog. The seminar does not include your therapy dog test. The cost of the test is $30.00. If you think you need more practice, testing times may also be scheduled when you feel you are ready. This seminar does not guarantee you will pass your therapy test but you will feel more confident and secure about you and your dog’s skills. Most teams do take and pass their test the first time. If for some reason you are scored “Not Ready” we will re-test you at no additional cost.

Pet Therapy [Seattle Style!]
PLEASE NOTE: The tuition for this class applies to each person. That is, one tuition, one person may attend. If you have a second handler for the same (registered) dog, the additional handler fee is due.
Class size is limited to 10 dogs. Dogs under 9 months must have prior approval from the instructor(s).
Prior to enrolling in this class your dog must meet a minimum obedience standard. They must have good basic obedience skills and be able to perform these skills in a room that is new to them. The basic obedience skills include “sit”, “down”, a “three-second stay” on leash, and dogs must display NO aggression toward people or other dogs. You are expected to maintain control of your dog at all times. Most dogs come into pet therapy class having experienced at least two obedience classes but that is not a requirement. Many people have older dogs or they trained their own dogs without attending formal training classes. If you have questions about your dog’s ability to succeed in this program, you’re just not sure if he is ready for therapy work or your dog is less than 9 months of age, please email us so we can discuss it further. If your dog pulls on the leash, we will give you pointers on that issue in class as well as direct you on how to perform the “meet and greet” with a neutral dog.
The course instructors are all registered Reading with Rover D.R.E.A.M. team members and Delta Society Pet Partners with their own dogs. They have extensive histories of volunteer time and have participated in pet therapy for many years. Several of our instructors are pet therapy evaluators as well. This course will help you prepare for the Reading with Rover D.R.E.A.M. test (and the Delta Society Pet Partner evaluation). Each week we will practice the elements of the therapy dog evaluation. For example, we will practice one of the test’s most difficult elements each week: the “meet and greet” with a neutral dog. (Meeting another person who has their dog at their side while your dog is at your side. You shake the person’s hand while your dog stays by your side, remaining neutral.) Beginning with the first day of class, we will evaluate you and your dog so we can uncover your team’s (you and your dog’s) weakest skill which, once identified, will give you a better idea of where to focus your time so you can practice during the weeks to come. We will go over the exercises required by both organizations, Reading with Rover and Delta Society, so you will be well prepared for your test. Our in-class sessions are not “real” evaluations – they’re just practice. So don’t get nervous. Just relax and have fun with this class!
Your dog must be at least one year old to take the Reading with Rover D.R.E.A.M. team test (and the Delta Society Pet Partner evaluation) – that’s a Reading with Rover requirement (and a Delta Society requirement), but not a requirement to attend class. One Puppy To Go! [Agility!]
Limited to puppies up to one year old.
What? Puppies can’t do agility? Yes, your puppy CAN do agility if the equipment and the environment is right. Our “One Puppy To Go! Agility!” class is held in our riding arena which has sand-based footing. We have all nylon equipment with Velcro straps, nothing hard that would bump your puppy or frighten them. After years of having puppy socials here and letting our student pups play with our agility equipment in the arena and seeing how much fun they have, we thought, “Why not offer an agility class for puppies?” This is NOT about competition agility. It’s about something fun to do with your puppy, building confidence and a better relationship with your dog. It’s something the whole family can be a part of.
By week 5 your puppy will be going through tunnels, leaping tall buildings in a single bound! Well, okay, slight exaggeration there. How about jumping through hoops and weaving through weave poles, all very low to the ground and safe!

Small Dogs, Big World [Star-Barks for Small Fries]
Limited to 12 dogs, 5 months or older, maximum weight: 25 lbs.
Our small dogs have begged us for years to have a class for small dogs so here it is folks!
This class is designed for toy/small breeds, under 25 pounds. It’s a Star-Barks class for little ones only. This is an appropriate class for any puppy/dog under 25 pounds and over 5 months of age. It is great to let small dogs play with other small dogs without fear of larger dogs pouncing on them. Even in friendly play, a small dog could get injured so rest easy little ones. This class is all about you, designed for you. We may have a field trip so be ready to hit the road and work in real life social situations.
All dogs must be current on their vaccines including bordetella (kennel cough) and have a recent fecal (within the last 60 days) with proof of results (the report). No intact dogs over the age of 9 months.

Seattle's Best Dogs 2 Go [On Location]
Take your obedience skills out of the classroom and up to the next level. This follow-up course to Seattle’s Best Dogs applies what you have learned in the classroom to real life situations. Each class takes place at a different local location, including parks, trails and malls, giving us the chance to practice our skills out among real distractions. We’ll be working on loose leash walking, recall, meet and greets, and what to do when things don’t go as planned.
Our local area boasts some of the most dog friendly places in the country. This course is designed to help make sure you and your dog are prepared to take advantage of that safely and with confidence. Classroom learning is an excellent tool for learning obedience skills but, as many of us can attest, the way our dogs behave can change dramatically from one situation to another. Practice in real world situations is critical to proofing a solid stay, teaching a joyous and consistent recall, and having an enjoyable and relaxing loose leash walk. That’s why on location training can be such a huge benefit.Come hit the trails (and parks and shopping malls) with us!

Healthy Paws Seminar [Nail Trimming Made Easier]
Trimming a dog’s nails makes a lot of people nervous which can make a lot of dogs nervous. So many of us avoid it altogether or we often pay someone else to “do the deed” and we want to help take some of the pain out of trimming your dog’s toenails. Our goal is to help you be more comfortable by sharing the tools available and the methods that will help you be more comfortable and have more confidence trimming dog’s nails. While paying someone else to do the job is a fine alternative, rarely are the nails trimmed often enough or short enough. Many times just the tips of the nails are cut and much more could have been taken off. Educating yourself about your your dog’s feet and the benefit of keeping his nails trimmed is so important. It’s a necessary evil that needs to be addressed so your dog does not have to live with painful feet due to the lack of nail trimming.
The fear of cutting into the nail bed (the quick) causing some bleeding is the average dog owner’s worst nightmare. So many dogs go to the vet or the groomer instead. But the truth is, even the professionals can cut the quick and cause the nail to bleed now and then. The difference between a pro nicking too far and a dog owner is that the pros don’t worry about it. Dogs need to have their nails trimmed every 3 to 4 weeks. Some dogs, like some people, have nails that grow longer and faster so each dog is different. Dogs need to be handled differently depending on their fear level and we will help you with the different techniques we have with our live demonstrations. We’ve been trimming our own dogs and our clients’ dogs’ toenails for over 20 years and we want to pass the valuable tips and tricks that we have learned on to you by offering this seminar.
There will be hands-on practice as well as videos. The goal of this seminar is to help build your confidence and take the fear out of this experience for you and for your dog. Being able to trim your dog’s toenails also saves you time and money as well but the real benefit is that this also builds trust in your dog once they realize you know what you are doing and are comfortable with this exercise in nail trimming. We’ve had old dogs come into our kennel limping and the owners don’t know why. And the remedy was a simple nail trim. The dogs actually thank us when we make walking less painful with proper nail trims and they do appreciate it. And so will you when you understand the importance of keeping your dog’s feet fit and healthy!

This won’t be easy for either of you but when you achieve, you learn, grow and build confidence. We want you to have the ability and the confidence to take your dog anywhere you like and know he will do as he is asked, when he is asked, and it won’t be a struggle for either of you. This is truly The Rarest Blend of dog and handler!
All dogs must be current on their vaccines including bordetella (kennel cough) and have a recent fecal (within the last 60 days) with proof of results (the report). No intact dogs over the age of 9 months.
Children attending class: Kids age 6 and older are welcome in class if they are not disruptive. Every person attending our classes has paid tuition to be there and it is not fair to them if a child is making it difficult to concentrate or listen to the lesson. One Puppy To Go, Please [Take Your Puppy Anywhere!]
Puppy ages 8 to 20 weeks. (Toy breeds up to 24 weeks.)
This is an issues focused seminar meant to help you with your new puppy in his new environment. It is designed to help you cohabitate with this new young dog in your house, on your schedule, with your family and with your lifestyle. Bring your questions and all issues.
Having a puppy doesn’t have to mean staying home. We’ll cover steps that will make you and your puppy comfortable traveling together, whether it’s out for coffee or visiting relatives. We’ll show how to socialize your puppy with a variety of different sights and sounds-without scaring them. We’ll work on meeting and greeting strangers while maintaining control of your puppy and the situation. We’ll also start teaching your puppy to “hang out” nearby. We’ll supply some ideas where to go, where to avoid and what to take with you. And then we’ll go! This three week class features one classroom day and two field trips, where we practice our learning hands-on. This is real life training for real life situations you will encounter either in public or in your home.
We will also include housebreaking tips, and address issues such as biting, jumping and how to handle the puppy with children in tow.
Many times we leave our puppies home when running errands or visiting friends because we lack confidence at our end of the leash. At Puppy Manners we build your confidence and coach you on puppy etiquette so you will feel more comfortable going places with your puppy. Being able to take your dog with you to a variety of places is rewarding for both of you. Many people leave their dogs at home because they are not sure where they can take them or what to do if there is a problem. Many dogs are overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of everyday life on-the-go. So start your puppy off on the right paw and gain a traveling companion for life. Join us for “One Puppy To Go, Please” and, of course, bring your puppy with you!
Puppy must be vet checked for wellness prior to class. Puppy must be at least seven days out from his first vaccine (DHPP). Puppy must have a recent fecal test (within the last 60 days) with proof of results (the report) and be on treatment if the test is positive for parasites in order to participate in class activities. If your vet agrees, we would prefer that your puppy has a Bordetella vaccine prior to class but this is optional and the decision is up to you and your vet. Some vets like to give the Bordatella vaccine to pups AFTER 16 weeks of age. If your puppy has a parasite or giardia, you may still come to class without your puppy. Alternatively you may bring your puppy and crate him during the socialized play period which is only about 10 minutes of the class time. In the latter case, your puppy would be permitted attendance after socialized play concluded.
Once your puppy has a clear fecal and the report has been submitted, he may participate in the socialized play portion of the class. If puppy is positive for parasites, some students prefer to leave puppy at home and come to class without puppy, then bring puppy after he receives his second vaccine. It’s up to you. We feel our protocol is safe and it’s what our animal health care provider recommends. Many people come to class without the puppy week one and that is fine as well. After all, it’s your lesson too!

K-912 [Advanced help for kids and dogs]
K-912 for kids and dogs is for kids and puppies who have completed K911 or are involved in 4H club with their dog and have worked in a beginning obedience class.
This class picks up where the kids left off with more advanced agility skills, some scent work for the puppies, and more positive games for the students and their puppies to learn. These classes are great for kids and puppy/dogs as they form a bond, set goals and gain in confidence with their skills.
Prerequisite: Kids from 7 to 12 years old who have taken Puppy Manners’ K-911 class — dogs: any age. No adults.
